Rules? Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Rules!

Sometimes decorating feels like a foreign language: Do you put the rug under the couch or just the table? Can you mix stripes and florals? Do 1950s pieces work well with 1800s pieces? Wait, what is a credenza?

Fortunately, unlike learning French, there’s only one rule to remember: There are no rules when it comes to decorating! And Ballard Designs set out to prove it, listing seven common decorating “rules” that one should never abide by. Check out their list and then leave us a comment below, telling us whether or not you agree that these traditional tactics are better off forgotten — or necessary for a harmonious home.

  2. I also have a couch, but break all the rules generally. Love the ecclectic look.
